Xlendi, Gozo: The Bay That Makes You Stay Longer Than Planned
Xlendi is the kind of place you visit for an hour and leave three hours later. A small, sheltered bay on the southwest coast of Gozo, it has everything that makes the Maltese islands special: clear turquoise water, dramatic limestone cliffs, colourful fishing boats, and waterfront restaurants where the fish was in the sea that morning.
It's less famous than the Blue Lagoon and less visited than Marsaxlokk, which makes it one of the genuine hidden gems of the Maltese islands, which makes it one of the genuine hidden gems of the Maltese islands.
The Bay
Xlendi bay is narrow and sheltered, flanked on both sides by tall limestone cliffs that glow amber in the late afternoon sun. The water is calm, clear, and deep — perfect for swimming and snorkelling. There's a small sandy area at the back of the bay and flat rocks along both sides for sunbathing.
The bay faces southwest, which means it catches the afternoon sun beautifully. Arriving around 4pm and staying for sunset is one of the best experiences Gozo has to offer.
Swimming and Snorkelling
The water in Xlendi is excellent for snorkelling. Visibility is typically 8-12 metres, and the rocky seabed is home to octopus, sea urchins, and various Mediterranean fish. The deeper water at the mouth of the bay is popular with divers — there are several dive sites nearby including the Xlendi Cave and the Xlendi Reef.
Where to Eat
The waterfront promenade at Xlendi has a handful of restaurants, most of them specialising in fresh seafood. The quality is consistently good — this is Gozo, where the food is generally better and more honest than in the tourist areas of Malta. Look for lampuki (dolphinfish, in season September-November), grilled octopus, and fresh pasta with local seafood.
Eating at a waterfront table in Xlendi, with the bay in front of you and the cliffs rising on both sides, is one of the best dining experiences in the Maltese islands.
How to Get There
Xlendi is 3km from Victoria (Rabat), Gozo's main town. Bus route 306 connects Victoria to Xlendi. By car it's a 5-minute drive from Victoria and about 15 minutes from the Gozo ferry terminal at Mgarr.
To get to Gozo from Malta, take the ferry from Cirkewwa in the north of Malta. The crossing takes 25 minutes and runs frequently throughout the day. Alternatively, book a private boat tour from Malta that includes Gozo — we can take you directly to Xlendi by sea, which is the most spectacular way to arrive.
Walks from Xlendi
The coastal path west from Xlendi towards Wardija Point is one of Gozo's best short walks — dramatic cliff views, no crowds, and excellent photography opportunities. The walk takes about 45 minutes one way. Bring water and sun protection as there's no shade.
