Golden Bay Malta: Everything You Need to Know

Golden Bay is arguably Malta's most iconic sandy beach. If you're looking for a completely different kind of swimming experience, St Peter's Pool — a dramatic natural rock pool in the south of the island — makes for a perfect second stop on the same day — a wide, gently curving bay of warm golden sand backed by low cliffs and a single hotel. Unlike most of Malta's coastline, which is rocky limestone, Golden Bay offers the kind of proper sandy beach that visitors often expect but rarely find on the island.

This guide covers everything: the best time to visit, how to get there, what to bring, and the honest truth about crowds — so you can decide whether Golden Bay deserves a place in your Malta itinerary.

What Makes Golden Bay Special

Malta has very few sandy beaches. Most of the island's coastline is flat limestone rock, which makes for excellent swimming and snorkelling but isn't what most people picture when they think "beach holiday." Golden Bay is one of the exceptions — a proper sandy beach with shallow, calm water that's ideal for families, swimmers, and anyone who wants to lie on actual sand.

The bay faces west, which means afternoon and evening light is spectacular. Sunsets at Golden Bay are among the best on the island, with the sun dropping directly into the sea at the end of the bay.

When to Visit: Honest Advice on Crowds

Golden Bay is Malta's most popular beach, which means it gets genuinely busy in summer. In July and August, the beach is packed by 10am on weekends and public holidays. Weekday mornings are more manageable, but still busy by Mediterranean standards.

The best time to visit is May, June, September or October — the water is warm, the beach is far less crowded, and prices for sun loungers drop significantly. If you must visit in peak summer, arrive before 9am or after 5pm when the day-trippers leave.

How to Get There

Golden Bay is in the northwest of Malta, about 12km from Valletta. By bus, routes 44 and 225 run from Valletta and take approximately 45 minutes. The bus drops you at the top of the hill, from where it's a 5-minute walk down to the beach.

By car, there's a paid car park at the top of the hill. In peak season, this fills up early — arrive before 9am or expect to park on the roadside further up. By private boat, Golden Bay is easily accessible from the sea and arriving by water is by far the most scenic approach.

Nearby: Ghajn Tuffieha Beach

A 15-minute walk along the cliff path from Golden Bay brings you to Ghajn Tuffieha — a beach that many locals consider even more beautiful than Golden Bay, and which sees a fraction of the visitors. The path is well-marked and the views along the way are excellent. If Golden Bay looks too busy, Ghajn Tuffieha is always the better alternative.

Facilities

Golden Bay has full facilities: showers, toilets, sun lounger and parasol hire, a beach bar, and a restaurant. There's a lifeguard service during summer months. The Radisson Blu Resort is directly behind the beach and its pool bar is open to non-guests for a minimum spend.

Book a Private Boat to Golden Bay

One of the best ways to experience Golden Bay is by arriving from the sea on a private boat. You can anchor just offshore, swim in the calm bay, and leave when you want — without dealing with parking or bus schedules. We offer private boat tours that include Golden Bay as part of a full-day coastal route.
