Comino Without the Crowds: How to Visit the Blue Lagoon by Private Boat in 2026

The Blue Lagoon in Comino is one of those places that genuinely looks like the photos. The water really is that colour — an electric, almost unreal turquoise that shifts between cyan and deep blue depending on the light. The limestone cliffs really are that golden. On the right morning, it is one of the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean.

The problem is that everyone knows this. In summer 2025, the Blue Lagoon received an estimated 3,000 visitors per day at peak hours. The Maltese government has been debating visitor caps for years. The ferry companies run boats every 30 minutes from Cirkewwa. And the result is that the Blue Lagoon, between 10am and 4pm on any day from June to September, looks nothing like the photos.

If you want to understand the full picture of what Malta's islands offer beyond the tourist trail, our Gozo vs Malta guide is a good place to start before planning your boat day.

Why the Crowds Are Worse Than You Think

Most visitors to the Blue Lagoon arrive by ferry from Cirkewwa, the northern tip of Malta. The crossing takes about 25 minutes, and the ferries run continuously from around 9am. By 10:30am, the lagoon is already busy. By noon, it is genuinely difficult to find a clear patch of water to swim in.

The issue isn't just the number of people — it's the type of experience that results. The water near the main beach becomes murky from sunscreen and foot traffic. The anchored party boats play music. The vendors on the small beach sell overpriced food and drinks. The Instagram photos you've seen were taken at 7am in April, not at 1pm in August.

This is not a complaint about tourism. It's simply useful information if you want to plan your visit well.

The Private Boat Advantage: Timing and Access

The single biggest advantage of arriving by private boat is timing. We depart from the north of Malta at 7:30am, reaching Comino before the first public ferry of the day. For roughly 90 minutes, the Blue Lagoon is almost empty — just a handful of other early boats, clear water, and the kind of quiet that makes you understand why people travel to the Mediterranean in the first place.

By the time the first ferries arrive at around 10am, we've already moved on. Comino has more to offer than the Blue Lagoon alone: the Crystal Lagoon on the other side of the island, the sea caves along the northern cliffs, and several small coves that are completely inaccessible on foot and rarely visited even by boat.

The Sea Caves: What Most Tourists Never See

The sea caves along Comino's northern coastline are, in our view, more impressive than the Blue Lagoon itself. The largest cave has a ceiling that rises about 15 metres above the water, with a narrow entrance that opens into a cathedral-like chamber. The water inside glows blue-green from the sunlight filtering through underwater openings in the rock.

These caves are not accessible by ferry or kayak from the main beach. You need a boat small enough to navigate the entrance — which rules out the large catamarans — and a skipper who knows where they are. We've been running this route for years and still find it extraordinary.

Practical Tips for Visiting Comino in 2026

Regardless of how you arrive, a few practical points will make a significant difference to your experience.

Arrive before 9am. This is the single most important factor. The difference between 8am and 11am at the Blue Lagoon is the difference between a peaceful swim and a crowded beach.

Visit in May, June, or September. July and August are the peak months. The water is warmer, but the crowds are at their worst. June and September offer nearly identical conditions with a fraction of the visitors.

Bring your own food and water. The vendors on Comino are expensive and the selection is limited. A cooler with lunch and cold drinks on a private boat transforms the experience.

Don't anchor at the main beach. The best swimming at the Blue Lagoon is actually away from the main beach, near the rocks on the eastern side. On a private boat, your skipper can anchor wherever the water is clearest.

What a Full Day Looks Like

A typical private boat day from Hidden Gems Malta runs roughly as follows: early departure from the north of Malta, arrival at the Blue Lagoon before the crowds, a swim and snorkel in clear water, then a move to the sea caves on the northern cliffs. After the caves, we anchor in a quiet cove for lunch, then either explore the Crystal Lagoon or head back along the Maltese coastline, stopping at a few spots that don't appear on any tourist map.

The whole day takes about 6–7 hours. You return to port having seen a version of Comino that most visitors never experience.

Is It Worth It?

If you're coming to Malta and the Blue Lagoon is on your list, the question isn't whether to go — it's how to go. The ferry is cheap and convenient, but it delivers you into the middle of the crowd at the worst possible time. A private boat, departing early, gives you the place as it actually is: quiet, extraordinary, and worth every photograph.

We run private boat tours to Comino daily from April to October, with morning departures designed specifically to arrive before the crowds. Groups of up to 12 people. Snorkelling gear included.
