Malta is one of Europe's most year-round destinations — but that doesn't mean every month is equal. The difference between visiting in July versus October can mean the difference between a sweaty, overcrowded experience and an almost-perfect Mediterranean trip. Here's the honest breakdown.

If you're still deciding when to go, our Malta Trip Planning Call can help you pick the best dates based on your specific interests and budget — whether you're after boat trips, history, or just good weather without the crowds.

Quick Overview: Malta by Season

| **Winter** | December–February | 12–16°C | Very Low | Low |

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January & February — The Budget Window

The quietest months on the island. Temperatures hover around 12-15°C — cold by Maltese standards, but mild compared to most of Europe. Rain is possible, especially in January. Accommodation is at its cheapest, and you'll have Valletta, Mdina, and the temples almost to yourself. Boat tours are mostly suspended. Best for: history, culture, budget travellers.

March — Spring Begins

The island starts waking up. Temperatures climb to 16-19°C, wildflowers bloom across the countryside, and the first tourists begin arriving. Sea is still cold (16°C) but the light is beautiful for photography. Good value, low crowds.

April — The Sweet Spot Starts

April is excellent. Warm days (18-22°C), very little rain, and the island is green and lush before the summer sun burns everything brown. Easter week brings local festivals and processions — spectacular to witness, but accommodation prices spike. If visiting in April, book early and avoid Easter weekend if you want lower prices.

May — One of the Best Months

May is arguably the best month to visit Malta. Temperatures reach 22-26°C, the sea warms up to 19-20°C (swimmable for most people), and crowds are still manageable. Boat tours to Comino and the Blue Lagoon run daily but aren't yet overwhelmed. Prices are reasonable. Highly recommended.

June — Summer Begins

June marks the start of peak season. Temperatures reach 28-30°C, the sea hits 22-23°C, and tourists flood in — particularly from the UK and Germany. Blue Lagoon starts getting crowded by mid-morning. Prices rise noticeably. Still a great time to visit, but book accommodation and boat tours well in advance.

July & August — Peak Season

The hottest and busiest months. Temperatures regularly exceed 33-35°C, and the humidity can make sightseeing exhausting in the middle of the day. The sea is at its warmest (26-27°C) — perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Blue Lagoon is extremely crowded; arriving before 9am or after 4pm makes a significant difference. Prices are at their highest. Best for: beach holidays, nightlife, water sports.

September — The Hidden Best Month

September is Malta's best-kept secret. The summer crowds thin out after the first week, but the sea is still warm (25-26°C) — actually warmer than July. Temperatures drop to a comfortable 27-29°C. Prices start falling. Boat tours are still fully operational. This is when locals say the island is at its best. Highly recommended for couples and those who want the full summer experience without the peak-season chaos.

October — Autumn Perfection

October is the other great shoulder month. Temperatures settle around 22-25°C, the sea stays warm (23-24°C) into mid-October, and the island is noticeably quieter. Occasional rain from mid-October onwards, but rarely prolonged. Prices drop further. An excellent choice for families, older travellers, and anyone who finds summer heat overwhelming.

November — Getting Quieter

November brings cooler temperatures (17-20°C) and more frequent rain. The sea cools quickly. Most boat tours to Comino wind down by mid-November. However, it's a beautiful month for photography — dramatic skies, golden light, and almost no tourists. Very cheap accommodation.

December — Festive Malta

December is surprisingly festive. Christmas decorations go up early, and Valletta's streets are beautifully lit. Temperatures average 14-17°C. The Christmas markets and nativity scenes (presepji) are worth seeing. New Year's Eve in St Julian's is lively. Not a beach holiday, but a genuinely atmospheric time to visit.

The Honest Verdict

**Best overall:** May or September/October — warm sea, manageable crowds, reasonable prices.

**Best for boat trips:** May through October (Blue Lagoon is at its best May–September).

**Best for budget:** January–March or November.

**Best for families:** May, June, or September.

**Avoid if you hate heat and crowds:** July and August (unless you're specifically after the beach/nightlife scene).
